Writing your essay

After you have done your research and thought through your approach, you need to write. Some people still like to write a first draft manually but for most of us this means sitting at a computer. When writing your essay, you need to think about the reader and what they need to know. Write as if the reader is the outside examiner, not your tutor; define your terminology and explain your approach. Most essays at this level require a coherent argument. In order to produce this you need to:

  • Introduce your argument
  • Define your terms
  • Proceed logically through your points
  • Provide evidence
  • Come to a conclusion
  • Follow layout conventions
  • Write clearly
  • Reference your sources
  • Include a Reference list
