Jean-Delphin Alard

b. Bayonne, 8.3.1815 d. Paris, 22.2.1888

Teachers: François Antoine Habeneck (violin, 1827-31). François Joseph Fétis (theory and composition 1831-3).

Associates: Paganini, Baillot, Berlioz (played Harold in Italy in 1842), Deldevez, Jules Armingaud, Chevillard, Franchomme, Charles Hallé, Piatti.

Professional Appointments: Member of King Louis Philippe's Royal Orchestra, 1840-48, and Solo Violin of the orchestra from 1842. Held the same position in Napoléon III's Imperial Orchestra from 1853. Professor at Paris Conservatoire, 1843-75.

Chamber ensembles: Société de Musique de Chambre - mainly devoted to string quartets. Founded in 1835 by Alard and Franchomme; in 1848 become the Société (i.e. Quartet) Alard- Franchomme, and continued till 1872. They performed with Charles Hallé in 1847-8. Alard also played quartets with Chevillard and, in London in 1849, with Deloffre, Hill and Piatti.

Pupils: Pablo de Sarasate, Jules Garcin, Jean Becker, Adolf Pollitzer.
