Observations générales (see below for English translation)

Vom Zeitmass.

English translation

Of separate bowstrokes

If there are no dots over the notes they are executed with the bow on the string. With dots, however, they are played in the middle of the bow, which is called sautillé [with springing bow]. If it is indicated by strokes

Of staccato

Staccato is mostly executed with the bow biting on the string. It is shown with normal dots [under a slur]. If it is marked with strokes [under a slur] it is played with a light lifted bow, as with sautillé, which I call flying staccato.

Of little notes

I have indicated the length the little notes should be given as accurately as possible. If, however, they are given with a line through them they should be short. If they have no line through them they are played long.

Of tempo

In general the works of the old masters are played at a very moderate tempo. Moreover, we have indicated it with the metronome according to what we believe to be the tradition. One can therefore consult this to make matters easier.

NOTES

Alard had explained the bowing/articulation terms in his Ecole du violon (Paris: Schonenberger, [1844], pp.63ff).

Détaché: he distinguishes the détaché trainé, used throughout the earlier sections of the Ecole, from the grand or véritable détaché, which is more biting (mordant) and brilliant. In a musical example, Alard shows that 1/4-notes with dots should be played as 1/8-notes with dots, using the central third of the bow.

Staccato: this is the equivalent of what is commonly termed 'up-bow', or 'down-bow' staccato today - the bow remains on the string and plays a series of notes in one bow, with separations between them, stopping the bow after each note. Alard also describes the staccato élastique, made by dropping the bow on the string and letting it bounce, playing several notes in one bow (modern jeté). The staccato volant is played, not by keeping the bow on the string, but using a 'nervous movement of the wrist which makes the stick jump' (un mouvement nerveux du poignet qui fait sauter la baguette). This is notated by wedge marks, Alard's points allongés.

Sautillé: played in the middle of the bow, with a loose wrist, letting the bow bounce by itself using its natural weight, controlling the bow with the index finger to keep it in place. Alard also describes a slower version of this technique, the sautillé modéré, made by holding the bow more firmly and producing a smaller bounce (un sautillment imperceptible).
