Joachim's use of a harmonic for the first entry of the solo violin makes it clear that he expected to play the whole of this opening phrase, and presumably its repetition 4 bars later, without vibrato.

Joachim will have envisaged a standard 'German' portamento here, with the 1st finger sliding more or less audibly to e''' before the 4th finger rapidly falls on a'''.

The slide of the 3rd finger from f'' to a'' is presumably for the sake of expressive portamento (otherwise he would have used a 4th-finger extension for the harmonic a'') both up and down to the d''. In the hands of some players this might have been a discreet portamento, in those of others a much more pronounced effect.

In view of the marking espress. a prominent portamento on the 2nd finger shift from d''' to bb'' was probably envisaged.

Some portamento between bow changes was probably expected here to emphasise the legato character of the music.

Here too Joachim's fingering implies obvious portamento.
