These staves were originally annotated in light pencil, but the annotations have been altered and amplified by David in a thicker, darker pencil.

The question of whether the original markings are David's cannot be answered with absolute certainty. It seems very probable that they are his, but from a considerably earlier period, before his handwriting and his usage of down bow signs had reached their mature form. The pencil is so light that it is sometimes barely visible on the web image, but it is clearer on the PDF.
