This insertion in David's hand, fixed over the original with sealing wax, provides a re-notated version of this passage, in which many of Volkmann's irregular rhythms have been simplified and, in a few cases, the notes have been modified. The principal reason for David's changes seems to have been to clarify the position of figures within the bar (suggested by his insertion of dotted bar-lines in the middle of each original bar), but he may also have found Volkmann's apparent attempt to indicate the type of rubato a skilled player would have applied in a passage of this kind unhelpful and restricting. It is unlikely that David would have expected to play the rhythms in his own version with the degree of precision they would be given in modern performance. His changes of notes are confined to Volkmann's faster figurations, which he rewrote with fewer notes, suggesting that he found them too agitated for the musical context.
