As usual when con espressione or espressivo is marked, portamento fingerings of an expressive kind occur. The 1-1 fingering on the next stave i also typical, inviting portamento where a later violinist would have changed position on the second d'' to avoid an audible shift.

A printed 2 seems first to have been duplicated here in blue crayon, then deletedin an attempt to change it to a 1. The 1 in the form of a printed 1 below pp may indicate David's intention for a change to the printed fingering here.

These brackets seem intended to draw attention to the slurs.
