David may wish to indicate a different phrasing for the two parts, the bow leaving the lower string after the pairs of 8ths, while the upper voice is sustained.

In this bar, Bach's autograph has no slurs. David changes the typically eighteenth-century slurs in his source line to a more lively cross-beat pattern (still heard in many present-day performances).

Note how David changes the original bowing (correctly transcribed in his source line, to balance the up and down bows, and to allow the violinist to stay in the upper half of the bow.
