This is not Brahms' term. The first edition has 'in tempo poco a poco e cresc.' The reason for Schnirlin's change here is unclear, although, since he makes reference to the Stichvorlage (now lost) and 'manuscript' in a footnote to the Adagio, there may perhaps have been something in the sources to justify it, though his lack of a footnote here does not support such an assumption.
