Ferdinand David » Violin Concerto no. 5 in D » David, Ferdinand - Breitkopf & Härtel

First published in 1857 (Breitkopf & Härtel), the work was added to David's series of Concerte neuere Meister soon after David's death in 1873. For the autograph score see Ferdinand David (MS) - 1856. The printed edition shows that the composer made some significant changes to the notes of the solo part before publication.

In the published edition David provided detailed fingering for the solo part, which was mostly absent in the autograph score. If we possessed the manuscript copy from which he first performed the concerto it would, as in all the surviving copies from which we know he performed, undoubtedly have shown a number of changes of mind about fingerings before he arrived at the published version. Some of David's fingerings in the concerto are purely technical, but many are designed to achieve distinctive expressive portamento or colouristic effects. Particularly interesting examples are indicated by added red boxes in the scans.
