Ferdinand David » Violin Concerto no. 5 in D » David, Ferdinand - the composer's autograph

David's autograph MS, with numerous revisons in orange crayon and pencil and a few in blue crayon, and passages replaced with new sections secured with red sealing wax. The end of the first movement is dated at 'Homburg v[on] d[er] H[öhe]15 Juli 1855' and the Finale 'H[om]b[ur]g 25 Juli [18]55'. The present second movement (possibly replacing an earlier slow movement) was inserted later and the beginning of the Finale revised; it is dated at 'Leipzig 23 Aug[ust] 1856. The score shows no obvious signs of having been used as a Stichvorlage and it seems likely that David had a copyist's score made for the purpose of performance and/or engraving. The score contains only a few isolated fingerings in the solo violin part. David evidently annotated the copy of the solo part from which he will have given the earliest performances. Although there are only minor differences in general between the solo part in the score and as published, David's fingerings in the edition add a vitally important level of phrasing and expression that gives the music the distinctive colouring of his musical personality. The autograph is the property of Uppingham School and currently held in their archive. [C. B.]

Note that the full score below includes the pages previously concealed by sealing wax (identified as such with an inserted text box).
