Ferdinand David » Am Springquell » David, Ferdinand - (Autograph)

Ferdinand David's autograph manuscript of his Am Springquell, from the Uppingham Collection. The manuscript is bound with his personal copy of a Peters edition of Beethoven's Romance in G op. 40, and his manuscript copies of Bach's E major prelude and Air from the Orchestral Suite in D. The date is conjectural, assuming that the copy preceded the publication date (op. 39 is listed in Hofmeister in July 1861). David's autograph shows the piece in almost its final form. There are a few fingerings and accidentals that differ from the published version in Dur und Moll. In the autograph copy, however, the bariollage figurations have been simplified using long notes for the accomaniment element and double length notes for the melodic part. This is undoubtedly only a matter of conveninece in notation and does not signify a difference in intention. The manuscript is extensively bowed and fingered and appears from the pencilled linker Elbogen (left elbow) apparently in Paul David's hand, presumably reminding the player to bring his elbow well under the instrument, to have been used by his son. A more literal copy must have been made for the engraver.
