Robert Schumann » Phantasie » Lauterbach, Johann - Pohle
From Lauterbach's Neue Concerto-Studien, vol. 2 no. 3.
The text at the top left-hand side of the first page of music translates as: 'The alterations in the solo part are introduced because of the technical and tonal peculiarities of the violin; the original part is included with the piano accompaniment.'
Lauterbach's alterations reflect the general feeling of the time that Schumann's writing for violin in his late solo works was not always technically suited to the instrument. It was this feeling as well as reservations about the composition itself that led Joachim to suppress Schumann's Violin Concerto.
