Franz Schubert » Rondeau brillant » David, Ferdinand - Peters
There is no reference in Hofmeister to the Peters edition presented here. David's original edition, however, was published by Bartholf Senff in 1868 and was listed in Hofmeister for January of that year. It was announced in Senff's house journal, the Signale für die musikalische Welt (26(1868), 758), with an enthusiastic comment on the music by J. C. Lobe. On 1 January 1872 David also premiered a version of the piece in his own arrangement for violin and orchestra (which seems not to have been published). Commenting on the latter performance together with his version of Leclair's Sarabande & Tambourin (from Die Hohe Schule des Violinspiels) the reviewer, F. Bernsdorf, remarked 'we have to praise the artist's accustomed drive and refinement, though at the same time we got the impression that he had to struggle against an unfortunate influence of the temperature of the room on the strings or against their inadequate quality' (haben wir die an dem Künstler gewohnten Vorzüge des Schwunges und der Feingeistlichkeit nachzurühmen, wenn uns nebenbei auch vorkommen wollte, als habe er mit einem ungünstigen Einfluss der Saal-Temperatur auf die Seiten oder mit unangenügender Qualität dieser selbst zu kämpfen gehabt) [Signale für die musikalische Welt 30/1(1872)51]
