Heermann (3 March 1844, Heilbronn, - 6 November 1935, Meran) studied violin with Lambert Joseph Meerts at the Brussels Conservatorium, and later with Joseph Joachim. In Frankfurt am Main, where he  he lived from 1864 he taught violin at the Hoch Conservatory from 1878 to 1904. In Frankurt he played 1st violinin a string quartet variously known as the Heermann-Quartett, Museums-Quartett, and Frankfurter Quartett. From 1906 to 1909 he taught at the Chicago Music College, in 1911 at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin and from 1912 at the Geneva Conservatoire.
