Robert Schumann » String Quartets

Friedrich Hermann (1828-1907) and Robert Heckmann (1843-1891) had both been pupils of Ferdinand David, who was closely associated with Schumann in the first performances of the quartets. Hermann probably played them in public concerts with David, as viola player of the Gewandhaus ensemble from 1846 until David's death in 1873. Heckmann, as a pupil of David during the mid 1860s probably experienced performances of the works by the Gewandhaus quartet under David, and may well have performed in them during his Leipzig years. Heckmann was later the leader of a celebrated quartet based in Cologne (Köln), which regularly included Schumann's quartets in its programmes.
