How Education can Save Lives: The Rise of Disability Hate Crime Reports in West Yorkshire

Audio:

A podcast that discusses the rise in reports of disability hate crime.

West Yorkshire saw the most hate crimes reported against someone with a disability between October 2017 and October 2018. 536 reports of hate crime is a shocking number, but is it necessarily a negative figure?

Could it be that West Yorkshire have provided an education to their population, both disabled and non-disabled, about what the signs of hate crime are and how they can intervene and report it?

And how much further does this education need to go before figures of disability hate crimes reports can be reduced? Not because those with disability's live in fear, but because they live in an enviroment that is educated in preventing hate crime.

Great to see people recognising hate crime and then being brave enough to report it.

Great podcast Olivia, after recent events in Aldmonbury, hate crime is clearly an issue in Huddersfield and perhaps further afield in Yorkshire and anything you can do to educate must be a positive

Very enlightening to discover that disabled people are victims of hate crime on a large scale. Education certainly helps to know when to report a crime and what hate crime actually is. The information provided has been very useful.

Shocking to hear the number of reported hate crimes in Yorkshire but good to hear so much work is being done to raise awareness and educate the public.

I didn't realise how much hate crime there was but will certainly now take more notice when I'm out and about.

Shocking figures. Good to hear disabled people are becoming more confident in reporting crimes and also are being educated on how to keep safe.
