Elvis is Back in the Gazebo

Scarecrows took over Meltham yesterday, as the annual Scarecrow festival showed off the local's creativity. Gardens, benches and churches were home to these wild creations, as well as some local performances, and marquees.

Judges were walking around the event, assessing everyone's scarecrows. One of the judges included the father of well known ex Huddersfield Giants player, and ambassador Eorl Crabtree. Events for children were also being held such as fancy dress, and a word hunt - where participants gathered clues from scarecrows to form a word.

Some scarecrows promoted events, and raised awareness for environmental issues. Edible Meltham - a movement encouraging people to source their own fruit and vegetables - advertised an event they had coming up where people swap seeds with other gardeners. For the festival, they had their Scarecrow Fred, who was sat next to a wheelbarrow full of soil, so that people could take home their own seeds to grow.

The local Women's Institute raised awareness about the uses of plastic, by creating a Scarecrow out of plastic materials. Kate Schofield from the WI said that it was to raise awareness of Plastic Soup - the microplastic fibres that are shed from synthetic clothing and contaminate the oceans.

Meltham even hosted a celebrity at the festival, the king himself - Elvis Presley - was resurrected using an old halloween costume, some hair gel, and a guitar.
