School Exclusions

Schools across the UK will now have to take responsibility for the students who they have excluded.

A review was carried by former minister Edward Timpson, which highlights variation in exclusions practise across different schools, local authorities and certain groups of children.

Mr Timpson said:
"Exclusion from school should never mean exclusion from education.
"Throughout this review I have found too much variation in the use of exclusions and too many missed opportunities for children to remain in the education that best suits their needs."

A major review into expulsions has made 30 recommendations, which the government is going to roll out. It says that children being permanently kicked out should be a 'last resort'.

Education Secretary Damian Hinds believes there needs to be cuts on off-rolling. This is where children are removed from school registers without being formally expelled.
