From Africa to UK…My Mental Health Journey – RESPONSE

Before I go any further, I want to say thank you to everyone who listened to my podcast and commented. And would like to thank Mrs Shantel Mukungunugwa and Captain Debbie Sanders for their participation and everyone involved in the production of this podcast. I also want to thank God for always providing a way when there seemed like there was no way and helping me during this podcast.

I have to say that creating this podcast From Africa to UK…My Mental Health Journey has been a great experience. There was a lot of commuting done and setting up of interviews which was hard to do but that’s what makes every experience worth it because this topic was very close to home for me. I was glad to see that people from different nationalities were finding my podcast educational because of the different angle the topic was been approached and learn about a different culture.

The responses I got from most people have been good with some of them telling me about their own experiences, a gentleman commented on my podcast stating that he lived most of his life in Zimbabwe but never knew about mental health problems until they moved abroad and it seemed like it was a similar experience for most Africans.

I even got to hear some very sad stories from Captain Debbie Sanders which I wished to add on the podcast if there was time, about how in certain countries they practice dangerous methods to treat people who have mental health problems and what was a 30 minute interview session turned into a two hour counselling session which was very therapeutic.

The discussions about mental health continued online and from what I have seen so far is that there is a lot of work that needs to be done in the Black community regarding mental health awareness. But my main challenge is to parents to step up to the plate, understand that they have the responsibility of creating a safe space for children and as a community it’s our responsibility too.

Overall I’m glad my podcast was well received and started a conversation. In the future, I will aim to improve the podcasts I create to have more information for listeners in order for othem to be engaged more.
