Religion at University - response

Last week I uploaded a podcast discussing how religion reacts within an around Universities. I was extremely pleased to see that the most people agreed religious studies should be more of a priority not just for Universities for everyone.

My favorite comment was from Vikki Reeves which stated that 'tolerance can only be achieved from understanding' which I think is a key idea to lessen the prejudice and ignorance that embodies a lot of none religious people. A lack of understand is often the cause behind unkindness and discrimination. Although Yasmin and I didn’t discuss the issues surrounding racial and religious discrimination, with recent events such as Brexit and the racist mentalities that have arisen from that, I believe that would be a good topic to lead on to.

Sam Redgate-large agreed with the lack of education surrounding religion saying ‘at my school, we spent term after term learning about Jesus, but only ever a few sessions on other religions’. With the ever-growing variety of people living in the UK, a couple of sessions at primary and sometimes secondary school is not enough to help people understand different religions. I don’t believe we need to all undertake in-depth courses on different religions, but a broader knowledge would aid everyone in understanding that the differences between us are what give us such a rich culture. George Wallder however made a helpful arguing comment to that statement saying that more religious education isn’t supplied ‘due to a lack of demand’. Although I and others believe we should know more about other people's backgrounds, and want to, not everyone does.

George Wallder states ‘people's attitudes towards other religions must change before we can expect the religious education to be well received.’ This would be a key issue with increasing religious studies as not everyone is open minded to other people's religions. However, in the podcasts interview with Yasmin, she says how she’d appreciate just the available option of more religious education, if people just want to find out a bit more about different religions.

In conclusion, I am pleased with the attitudes of the comments received and happy to see that others agree we should know more about the several religions that embody our population. Perhaps the podcast could develop into one about the issues that develop from a lack of knowledge on religions and how that sometimes develops into racism.

Thank you for all your responses.
