Huddersfield's retail crisis

The impact of COVID has led to at least 56 empty shops on Huddersfield high street, according to a new study.
High Street has been struggling all over the country for the past few years and Councillor Peter McBride states they have “ambitious plans to reinvigorate it.”
He continued “The town centre will be a vibrant place to live, work and visit with thriving business, and culture at its heart.
We have already seen evidence of our local economy recovering from the effects of the pandemic, Huddersfield recently topped the country's high streets for the return of footfall and post-lockdown spending, making it an attractive location for new and established businesses.”
Last year, more than 17,500 store outlets vanished from high streets and shopping centres across Great Britain. Non-essential shops were forced to shut during lockdown as online shopping became more popular.
