Sign of the times for train users with hearing difficulties

TransPennine Express have announced a new scheme designed to make its stations more accessible for customers.

The British Sign Language interpretation service has been rolled out in stations in the North of England today and aims to provide customers who are deaf or have a hearing impairment with additional support when travelling.

Customers wishing to use the new tool can ask staff at the booking office to contact a sign language interpreter, the service is now available at stations including Huddersfield, Grimsby Town, Stalybridge, Manchester Airport, Dewsbury, Hull Paragon, Malton, Northallerton, Cleethorpes, Brough, Middlesbrough, Northallerton, Scarborough, Scunthorpe, Selby, Thirsk and Thornaby.

The InterpretorsLive! service provides access to a fully qualified sign language interpreter via a video link. The interpreter will communicate both to the customer and member of station staff, answering any queries whether it’s ‘what platform is my train leaving from?’ or ‘how can I find the cheapest ticket to Leeds?’.
