Ludwig van Beethoven » Cello Sonatas (complete editions) » Grützmacher, Friedrich - Peters

Grützmacher edited these sonatas twice, first c.1868 (plate no 4901) and later c.1894 (plate no. 7984). The later edition retains almost all of Grützmacher's fingerings, but alters many bowings and phrasings, and removes many of his dynamic and other expressive markings, especially his messa di voce hairpins. Indeed, it may even be the work of another cellist published under Grützmacher's name. The later edition is extremely close to the Gesamtausgabe text first published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1864. Carl Hüllweck's equally conservative edition had been published by Breitkopf only a few years earlier, and Peters may have decided to offer something similar. However, it is also possible that Grützmacher's practice in later years was influenced by the more stringent editorial practices of the later 19th century, and the growing canonic status of the Beethoven sonatas in the 1890s.
