Expansion of London Heathrow to go ahead

Environmental campaigners have lost a High Court challenge against the governments decision to approve plans for a controversial third runway. 

Villages like Harmondsworth and Sipson will be bulldozed to make way for the new £14 billion plan. Construction could begin in 2021, with a third runway being operational by 2026. Creating hundreds of new jobs in Hillingdon.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: "The expansion of Heathrow is vital and will provide a massive economic boost to businesses and communities across the length and breadth of Britain, all at no cost to the taxpayer and within our environmental obligations.

Residents are concerned over increased conjestion and pollution in the area. They argued that the governments national policy statement failed to fully account air quality and climate change when agreeing plans for the proposed third runway; but the judges ruled their plans were lawful.

The campaigners said the runway would effectively create a ''new airport'', having a severe impact on Londoners..
