what makes us feel safe or unsafe at night in Huddersfield?

Audio:

2019, the year that crime statistics in Huddersfield have increased to an alarming rate. Police are taking action by putting more officers on the streets at night as the safety of the locals is being questioned.

As of last year, there have been twenty thousand plus crimes reported. This is a serious topic which unfortunately isn’t spoken about as often as it should be.

Join me in this episode where I will be finding out more about how we can stay safer on nights out, as well as how the number of crimes occurring are affecting students and their night life.

Today I will be talking to a police officer, a student of the University of Huddersfield and a bouncer from a nightclub in the town centre.

The podcast is great! The situation is the same here in Aberdeen the you see police on the street at the weekend but not on student night.

as a student In huddersfield, I would feel so much better if the amount of police on the streets at night, especially on student night was increased. I myself have been involved in a crime within a night club in the town centre when my friend was glassed. due to the fact that there were no police present at the exact time it happened, the man who did it got away. things like this should not happen when you go on a night out which you are meant to enjoy.

Tory austerity hasn't helped Huddersfield at all, the amount of Police cuts has ben alarming especially considering the rates of crime that has increased. As for nights in Huddersfield, the only street I feel safe on is Cross Church Street due to the amount of life going on, any other part of town is not very well lit and certainly doesn't have any Police presence.

This is a pertinent topic. We all should be able to feel safe on a night out. I thought the Police advice to keep safer was good but I think more does need to be done, both socially and politically. I enjoyed the podcast.

As someone who goes out a lot I am wary over thing like walking places alone, getting too drunk that I don’t know what I’m doing and wearing things slightly shorter and more revealing when in reality it shouldn’t have to be like that, I’d feel a lot safer with more police on the streets at night to keep us safe, all in all great podcast and very well put together, love how the music builds suspense

As a student in Huddersfield, this podcast gives an intriguing overview of the crime rates in Huddersfield. For me it has shocked me about the increase of crime rates and the lack of response from the police especially lacking the amount seen on the the streets on nights out. In my opinion it would feel more comfortable if I knew or saw police and additional security on the streets for the safety of students in particular who are seen to be more vulnerable. Overall the podcast is a brilliant overview on two perspectives of the current crime situation in Huddersfield, the music adds extra value and suspense to the podcast.

Your podcast has good use of statistics and content used and uses a very engaging tone. As a student of Huddersfield University, I personally believe that if more police were on the streets while people were on a night out then it would reduce or even prevent the risk of arguments and fights .

As a Huddersfield Student I often feel on edge when out on my own after dark. I think that it would put a lot of people at ease if there was a number of police patrolling at night. But on the other hand, sometimes a police presence isn't all that reassuring and may make people feel more on edge. I do think more needs to be done to make everyone feel safe, it's just a question of "what?"

i disagree, police have things to do that would better there time rather than standing about looking after drunken idiots

Nice opening music, it sets the serious tone of the subject you have chosen. Also a nice music link to your first interview; the more upbeat music makes us more aware of the job your interviewer has. You’ve picked an interesting subject matter and covered it really well, well done!

Great podcast with good music. And in regards to the topic, I think its time people just learn what consent is especially for us men, because we always are the offenders which can make it hard for women to just look forward to a great night out with friends and family.
