Witness Hearings for HIV scandal in Leeds

The Infected Blood inquiry will be holding public hearings where those effected by the hepatitis C and HIV blood scandal in the 70s and 80s.

 

The witness hearings will take place over a two week

period at the Crowne Plaza Hotel starting from the 11th to 21st of June.

NHS contaminated blood scandal

Theresa May has announced, annual payments will rise from fourty-six million to seventy-five million for the victims of the blood transfusion scandal.
The raise comes ahead of the inquiry beginning to hear individuals testimonies about the tragedy, that has killed thousands of people that were given blood products or transfusions from the 1970s to 1990s. The inquiry’s hearings will run from Tuesday to Friday every week and will be broadcast live online until Ocotber.

Many of the products came from blood donated by prisoners and drug addicts infected with HIV, hepatitis C and other viruses.
Ms. May stated: “The contaminated blood scandal was a tragedy that should never have happened and has caused unimaginable pain and hurt for victims and their families for decades.''
There is expected to be about 2,500 witness statements, with health department staff, NHS officials and politicians likely to be questioned in the later stages.Michelle Tolley, was given infected blood by health workers during child birth, she now has hepatitis C. She stated '' How can you put a price on your life'', she was infected 32 years ago.

Brian Langstaff has released a statement ''I have already read a large number (of witness statements) more than once, some a number of times. Some are harrowing; some incredibly moving; some chillingly factual. All are valuable. There are more to come''. The Infected Blood Inquiry will hear evidence at Fleetbank House, in central London, on Tuesday.
